How to Choose a Retirement Community in Mississauga

When researching for retirement communities in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), it can feel like an overwhelming task, especially if your criteria is too vague or large in scope. That’s why, as an Accredited Senior Agent (ASA), I always encourage my clients to have an idea of the services/amenities they want in a residence, along with an ideal price range and desired location. From there, it’s much easier to narrow down choices and zone in on potential communities.

Once you’ve decided that you’re ready to look at residences, it’s important to remember that they are all unique and have something different to offer. Not only do you want them to check off all your boxes, but you want to make sure that potential retirement communities are in line with your personality, interests and values, and that they offer an environment where you’ll feel most comfortable, cared for and safe. 

To do this, you’ll need to dig down deep to find out:
•    What’s truly important to you in a community?
•    What do you absolutely need versus what are the “nice-to-haves”?
•    When considering a location, which nearby services and activities are important to you?
•    Would you prefer to be close to your family or farther away?
•    What price range can you comfortably afford - now and in the future?
•    What services are included and what are considered extra?
•    Will your short- and long-term medical needs be taken care of?
•    Will your needs be addressed as your activity levels and health needs change over time?

The answers to these questions will help guide your decision and lead you to the best senior living option to carry you through your golden years.

Also, don’t be afraid to book tours at multiple residences. Tours are the best way to feel out a retirement community and find out whether it would be right for you. When you are there, speak with current residents and staff to see if the environment is somewhere you can picture yourself living, and address any specific concerns that you may have with the staff. And, if you’re open to it, stay for a meal or even overnight – many retirement communities in Mississauga offer this option. 

The key is to take the time you need to ask more questions and get as much feedback as you can to help inform your decision.
