When homeowners decide to downsize, it can be an often overwhelming task. As we move on in life, our needs change and, as the years add up, so do our possessions. That’s where “right-sizing” comes in – it’s when you make your home fit your lifestyle, instead of the other way around.
Here are five tips to consider when right-sizing your Mississauga home for an upcoming downsize:
1. Prioritize Your Possessions
Most of us have spent a lifetime accumulating a variety of possessions and storing them in our homes. Many of these items are sentimental and hold a great deal of personal value while others are no longer useful and take up prime space. Before you start right-sizing, take stock of your possessions – decide what is very important to you and what you can let go of.
2. Pass It On
If you have special heirlooms that you would like to pass on to family members, this is a great time to do it. You’ll be able to ensure that the right people receive your gifts and you’ll get to experience the joy of sharing your treasures with them.
3. Sell It
If you have enough possessions with above-average market value, an auctioneer can be arranged to host an estate sale. For everyday household items, online sale sites, like Kijiji or Craigslist, or a traditional garage sale are good ways to part with your belongings and make a few dollars.
4. Make a Donation
Oftentimes, community organizations, churches and charities are in need of household items – both large and small. Many of these organizations will pick up donations from you or can make arrangements to have the items dropped off. Either way, it’s a great way to give back to those in need in your community and to make space in your new home.
5. Clear It Out
If you come across items that are damaged, broken, unsafe or no longer useful, consider disposing or recycling these items through your local municipality or a junk removal service. This will provide you with a fresh, clean slate at your new home and avoid unnecessary moving costs of items that aren’t worth keeping.
