A great kitchen design can dramatically increase your property value, but knowing which features to invest your money into isn’t always easy. Appliances, finishes and features are all very important, but choosing the right kitchen cabinetry is key when attracting the most buyers.
When designing your kitchen, there are four factors to keep in mind when selecting cabinets: quality, symmetry, colour and layout. If you can meld these elements together when selecting your cabinetry, you're bound to boost your home’s value.
Quality
When choosing cabinetry, it’s important to focus more on quality versus quantity. While having many cabinets is nice, it’s better to invest in fewer, higher-quality cabinets that fit your space well. This includes using quality hardware, hinges, runners and soft-close drawers.
Symmetry
While subtle, nothing is more pleasing to the eye than symmetry. When designing the layout and placement of cabinetry, be sure to use wall cabinets of the same shape and size, when possible. Extended-height cabinets that go right to the ceiling are also very appealing to buyers. When selecting lower cabinets, choose larger, expansive banks of drawers which are practical and good looking.
Colour
Two-toned cabinets and dark, moody colours are popular kitchen design trends, but homebuyers prefer light and bright white cabinetry. A white kitchen feels larger and acts as a blank slate for buyers to put their own stamp on the home. White cabinetry is also a classic choice with great lasting power.
Layout
The kitchen is no longer a standalone room to merely prep food, cook meals and wash dishes. It’s a multifunctional space where people gather and enjoy spending time. When designing your kitchen, opt for an open-plan layout, preferably with a large island to use as a workspace or a casual dining area. A large island with cabinet drawers and doors can also increase the amount of storage space, which buyers are always looking for.
