Palisades on the Glen has asked one of its partners, Senior Moving Service Inc. to provide right-sizing advice for those individuals who may be having a difficult time in making decisions about taking the next step in moving or ‘right sizing’ to a new home.
Since 1998, Senior Moving Service Inc. has helped thousands of seniors to make the transition from the cares and responsibilities of a large residence to enjoy the many benefits of living in a modern retirement community. However, one of our customer’s most frequently asked questions is: “What do I do with all of my excess possessions?”
There are five main steps in the right-sizing process which include:
Prioritize Your Possessions
Most of us, who live in North America, have spent a lifetime accumulating a wide range of possessions and storing them in our residences. Many of these items are no longer useful or have any real meaning in our lives but we keep them because we can. You should take some time to go through all of your possessions and decide which are really important to you and which are just cluttering up your life. A good rule of thumb is: ‘If you haven’t used it or looked at it for over a year, then it probably doesn’t have any great importance in your present life.’
Pass It On
If you have some things that you feel are real family heirlooms and would like to pass them on to family members, this is a great time to do it. Not only will you be sure that the right people receive the treasures but you will have the joy of giving them to loved ones personally.
Have a Sale
If you have sufficient items of above average market value, an auctioneer can be arranged to come in and hold an estate sale of the larger possessions which you don’t really need anymore. Many families use web-based sales sites or help with more traditional garage sales to get rid of more common household items.
Make a Donation
Many people like the idea of donating surplus items to family, friends, church or one of the many community-based charities. Many of these organizations will pick up donations or Senior Moving can make arrangements to drop off furniture or boxes to any of the places you want them to go.
Clear it Out
Any items which have no real value and are clearly just clutter should be disposed of, either at the curb or we can arrange to make disposal by Senior Moving one of the last steps in your relocation process.
Although reviewing a lifetime of possessions may seem, at first, to be a difficult task, many of our customers have told us that the act de-cluttering has been one of the most rewarding and freeing activities of their relocation.
Senior Moving Service Inc. can help you with all aspects of your move including “Right Sizing” your life. Just call us at 1-888-777-0179 and arrange for a free in-home estimate and let us help you plan your transition to a better lifestyle.
I hope this has helped you in planning your move.
